EBEL

Elvis Presley gifted an Ebel gold-and-diamond wristwatch to songwriter J.D. Sumner, for price tag of $498,000 in today’s dollars. It was featured at the M.S. Rau Antiques in New Orleans.

Founded in 1922 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Neuchatel, Switzerland by Eugen Blum and Alice Levy, Ebel’s name is the combination of the founders’ initials (Eugène Blum Et Lévy).  The couple began their watchmaking in an established workshop producing Swiss luxury watches. Charles Blum, the son of the founders, expanded the company into many foreign countries. Under the direction of Blum’s Grandson in the 1970’s, they produced wristwatches for Cartier.

Ebel believes that watchmaking shares a vocabulary with architecture and is influenced by an unmistakable sense of aesthetic sophistication and remarkable artistry. In watchmaking, as in architecture, a blend of artistic refinement and technical precision gives rise to works conveying a wealth of purpose and emotion. Ebel has sponsored many famous architects such as Le Corbusier, who was born in the same city where Ebel was founded.
